A second woman pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing from Sportsman’s Warehouse in 2021.
Brittnie Raquel Clark, 24, and Tana Rose Koutchak Weckwerth, 24, were charged in November 2021 with second-degree theft and felony scheme to defraud after using coupons to steal merchandise from Sportsman’s Warehouse.
Weckwerth pleaded guilty Thursday to felony second-degree theft for a four year suspended imposition of sentence. Clark pleaded guilty in June to felony second-degree theft, and the state dismissed the charge of scheme to defraud. Weckwerth and Clark are required to pay $12,783.82 as restitution.
Superior Court Judge Brent Bennett said that community condemnation for theft offenses is high. Weckwerth has already paid $5,500 towards restitution, and Bennett said that shows her commitment to “turning things around.”
Assistant Public Advocate Rachel Duvlea represented Weckwerth and Assistant District Attorney Allison Baldock represented the state.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the Fourth Judicial District, the two women were working as cashiers at Sportsman’s Warehouse and stole $12,700.20 between July 7, 2021 and July 17, 2021. The complaint stated that the woman scanned a $50 rebate coupon, known as a Bounce Back Coupon, 216 times and put merchandise into store bags without scanning it.
Clark scanned the couple for her parents, sibling, husband, and Weckwerth, totaling $4,749.99. Weckwerth scanned $5,992,84 worth of merchandise for Clark and bagged $1,998.40 in merchandise for Clark without scanning it.
Store employees told Fairbanks police that all employees received training on using the Bounce Back Coupons. Employees said that they were instructed to only use the coupon once and to staple the coupon to the back of the receipt when used.
Clark and Weckwerth told Fairbanks police that they were not allowed to check out family members. Clark said that she was poorly trained and didn’t know she was not allowed to do what she did. Weckwerth also told police that she was poorly trained in how to use the coupon, and said she checked Clark out because Clark claimed she had coupons at home from family members spending money in the store.
